Contractors, Friends Team Up to Help Chadds Ford Resident Battling ALS Get Around His Home Easier

A group of contractors is making the holiday season a little brighter for a Chadds Ford man who is battling ALS, according to a staff report from 6ABC.

Donald Barna, who was diagnosed in 2022, has seen his mobility decrease significantly. This has made it much harder for him to get around his two-story house.

“Each day it’s getting harder and harder for me, even with my speech,” he said.

The family has been posting about his condition online, putting him top of mind for their friends.

“I learned of Don’s diagnosis when it happened, and I figured why not try to build him a bathroom to try to make life a little easier for him,” said John Ettore. “I just cold-called. I kept calling and calling, a bunch of different places until someone gave me a yes.”

Ettore’s business partner at DelCo Storm and Sewer Services as well as a local electrician all agreed to help. Additionally, materials for the project were mostly donated.

This gesture made an enormous impact on Barna’s everyday life.

“It means the world to me,” he said.
