A proposed campsite on Landenberg’s Big Elk Creek State Park has drawn some ire from neighbors who want to keep the land protected from heavy foot traffic, writes Zoë Read for WHYY.

Among them is Anteia Consorto, who has lived in the area for over three decades and enjoys the quiet of the rural Chester County community. Her backyard often plays host to deer, foxes, and rabbits. Her property borders rolling hills, valleys, and farm fields.

She is now concerned that the serenity she enjoys may be in jeopardy if the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources goes through with its proposal to place a campsite on a portion of Big Elk Creek State Park.

She and other residents worry about the environmental impacts of such a camp along with quality of life issues.

A written petition against the campsite she has distributed has so far gathered over 500 signatures and the online version has over a thousand.

“We’re happy to have people come and visit,” said Consorto. “We’re just trying to protect the environment and use it in such a way that it’s low impact.”
