Nearly a year after a devastating flood caused huge damage to its premises, Treetops Kitty Cafe in Kennett Square is still standing as a unique oasis for both cats and people, writes Ben Silver for Main Line Today. 

The nonprofit, which was founded in 2017, currently houses more than a dozen older cats and provides them with a more stable environment than the shelters they would otherwise inhabit. 

Older cats are terrified after being abandoned and put “in a cage in a loud place that they’re just uncomfortable with,” said executive director Hannah April, the nonprofit’s only full-time employee. “I wanted to give them a soft place to land until they find their next forever home.” 

That became impossible last December, when a faulty water meter in a neighboring unit caused a flood that ruined the cafe’s floors, the lounge area, and six expensive cat trees. 

The nonprofit quickly organized a fundraiser for renovations and the community responded by pitching in thousands of dollars to help. Almost a year later, the nonprofit has recouped most of its losses.
