Inspired by Grandfather’s Journey, Malvern Teen Champions Alzheimer’s Awareness
Malvern teenager Vincent Yao is getting recognized for his contributions to Alzheimer’s awareness, writes Richard Ilgenfritz for Main Line Media News.
His grandfather lived with Alzheimer’s, and Yao and his family made several sacrifices to be his caretakers.
His grandfather was previously in academia, and once built a school in a rural province in China. Yao recounts all of this in his award-winning essay for the 2023 Teen Alzheimer’s Awareness Scholarship Contest.
From more than 1,500 entries, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America selected Yao to be the recipient of a $5,000 scholarship.
In high school, Yao aimed to follow in his grandfather’s leadership footsteps and became a mentor through the Best Buddies Program and Key Club. He also coached tennis and taught coding.
Yao is now a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania, where he aims to pursue Alzheimer’s research.
