The Maryland Alzheimer’s Association has recognized a top executive at Genesis HealthCare in Kennett Square with the 2014 Helen S. Schulze Award.

The award went to Robert A. “Mike” Reitz (above center), executive vice president and chief operating officer of Genesis, with headquarters at 101 E. State St. in Kennett Square. The $5,000 award to the association was presented by Bob Schulze in Reitz’s name in memory of his wife Helen. Schulze is chief executive officer of Pizza Hut of Maryland, Inc., which owns more than 50 Pizza Hut restaurants. Helen Schulze passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease in 2007.

Reitz accepted the award at the association’s annual dementia conference in Towson, Md. Reitz began his career with Meridian Healthcare, first as a Nursing Center administrator and later as regional director and vice president of operations. When Meridian was acquired by Genesis in 1993, Reitz was named president of Genesis’ Mid-Atlantic Region and became responsible for operations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He was named chief operating officer of Genesis in 2003.

Reitz joined the board of the Maryland Alzheimer’s Association in 1988, lending his management expertise to the young and growing organization. He was instrumental in developing most of the governance and finance policies. Genesis HealthCare has been one of the association’s most generous corporate sponsors. In addition, Genesis HealthCare employees from facilities across the country and in Maryland have been enduring and enthusiastic fundraisers for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. In 2013, Genesis HealthCare raised $275,000 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s campaign.

Genesis HealthCare is one of the nation’s largest skilled nursing care providers with more than 400 skilled nursing centers and assisted living residences in 28 states nationwide. Genesis also supplies rehabilitation therapy to nearly 1,500 healthcare providers in 46 states.
