Kennett Square’s Stephen Powell may not be a household name, but this virtuoso in vocals is considered one of the best voices in opera.

Kennett Square’s Stephen Powell may not be a household name, but this virtuoso in vocals is considered one of the finest voices in the opera world, writes J.F. Pirro for Main Line Today.

This two-time Grammy nominee will release his third solo album, the first to be recorded with a full orchestra. He plans to record his next album with his wife, Barbara Shirvis, also a career singer, and his two sons, who are musicians.

At 58 years old, has been touring national and global stages for the past four decades, and can sing in English, French, Italian, and German.

Powell has always been a part of the music world, learning piano age six years old. He eventually played in a rock band and learned saxophone. However, it was his voice teacher at Northwestern University who encouraged him to focus on his singing.

Archetype: Arias for Baritone, was recorded in Nashville and features 13 arias. It would be an understatement to say that Powell is satisfied with the finished piece.

“It turned out beautifully,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier. I’m excited. The orchestra sounds fantastic.”
