An Exton doctor has some advice on how to survive tick season in The Keystone State. Dr. Marina Makous says that you should not automatically assume you have Lyme, write Mary Clare Fischer and Laura Brzyski.

“I always tell patients that if you put everything into the Lyme basket, you’re going to miss other things,” she said.

Makous’s private practice treats people with Lyme but she also warns other people to be mindful of other tick-borne illnesses, such as babesiosis or anaplasmosis, which is disease that has similar symptoms to Lyme Disease.

In the early phases, Lyme disease has flu-like symptoms such as fever, pains, aches, and headaches.

Rashes that appear in large red circles might present themselves in those who are infected with Lyme Disease. To prevent tick bites or Lyme disease, insect repellent, such as the EPA-approved Permethrin will decrease the likelihood of getting a tick bite.

Checking yourself for warm, moist areas, such as the back of your knees and armpit is also key. It is also suggested to put your clothes in the dryer on high heat following some time in nature and to shower within two hours. Make sure to check your pets as well.
