Towey’s Tavern just celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a big celebration on Saturday, June 24, 2023, writes Dino Ciliberti for Patch.

The bar located on York Road is known in Hatboro as everyone’s “home away from home”, said its owner, Jim Kinney.

Towey’s Tavern was opened in 1973 by Jim Towey, and he quickly established a Cheers-like atmosphere reminiscent of the popular 1980s American sitcom.

Kinney started coming to Towey’s Tavern when he was 15. His best friend was Towey’s son.

“I listened to the stories and loved being around the tavern,” he said.

Kinney eventually purchased the bar from the Towey family and has been running it for 27 years.

“It’s known to be a local neighborhood kind of tavern,” Kinney said. “It’s that kind of place. If you don’t know everybody, you’re going to meet them. We love having the camaraderie and friendships for many years. People come here young. Some move away, but they come back to visit.”
