A Clean Bill of Health: Chester County Is the Healthiest In Pennsylvania

Chester County is fit as a fiddle. Ranking at number one out of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania, Chester County is the healthiest in the Keystone State, according to County Health Rankings & Roadmaps. 

The life expectancy of the population is 81.2 years compared to Pennsylvania which is 78 years. It has a lower child and infant mortality rate compared to the entire state and the U.S.  

Health behaviors also play a role in Chester County’s impressive ranking. Only 13 percent of adults smoke compared to the rest of the U.S. at 17 percent.  

Chester County also scored a 9.0 out of 10 on the food environment index, which takes into account access to healthy foods and food insecurity rates. 89 percent of the population has access to exercise opportunities.  

However, the county did not succeed in controlling alcohol intake. A larger percentage, 23 percent, of Chester County residents have reported binge drinking compared with 21 percent in Pennsylvania and 19 percent in the U.S  

Social and economic factors contributed to the ranking. 95 percent of adults over 25 have a high school diploma or equivalent, 79 percent have completed some form of college education.
