Maybe it’s all that fresh air and open space for exercising. Maybe it’s the cardiovascular benefit of an occasional visit to a nearby brewpub or winery. Whatever the specific reason, Chester County has once again placed among the 500 healthiest communities in the nation, according to rankings from U.S. News & World Report.

To determine which communities in the country are the healthiest, the publication compared more than 3,000 counties and county equivalents. Its analysts examined 84 benchmarks across 10 health and health-related categories. Population health weighted the highest.

Chester County ranked No. 106, with an overall population health score of 76. The county improved significantly from last year, when it ranked No. 168.

Chester County ranked above the 50th percentile in part because of its high ranking in the population health category. Drilling down into the data reveals the components of our fit lifestyle:

  • Life expectancy is 81.4 years, significantly higher than the national median of 77.5 years
  • The population of smokers — 14.8 percent — is below the national median of 21.1 percent
  • Uninsured residents comprise 5.9 percent of the population, compared with the national median of 10.6 percent

Montgomery County and Bucks County also made the list, at Nos. 93 and 271, respectively.
