Berwyn’s Zoya Egan, who owns Zoya Egan Millinery and founded Fashion at the Races, started her hat-making career by accident, writes Diane Oliva for Main Line Tonight

Eight years ago, a friend invited Egan to Radnor Hunt Races with the words, “Hope you have a great hat!”

But Egan had no hats at all. However, she managed to dig out a pillbox hat she bought for 50 cents and took it apart. Then, she reassembled the hat using her imagination. Her creation won her the Radnor Races hat contest the following day.

She started making more hats just for the fun of it, which led her to seek formal education in London. She trained under the British milliner who used to make hats for Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II.

Today, she has her own studio in Berwyn and meets with her clients one-on-one to create their unique and perfect hats. In addition to their dresses, she bases her creations on their heights, hairstyles, face shapes, and body types.

“Hats aren’t an afterthought,” said Egan. “They can make or break your look, and this makes them an integral part of racing fashion.”
