West Chester comedian Manny Brown believes that despite the rise of independent shows and small comedy stages in Philadelphia, the city has yet to fulfill its full potential, writes Earl Hopkins for The Philadelphia Inquirer

Brown started Next in Line Comedy shows with fellow comedian Tyler Wolf in 2021. However, the two men said there are still not enough shows and open-mic events, as well as paid gigs for many local comedians to pursue full-time careers as comics.

There is progress, though. In addition to established clubs such as Helium Comedy Club and Punch Line Philly, comedians are now renting and performing at local restaurants, cafes, breweries, and bookstores. This provides them with more stage time along with consistent pay, and gives them a longer leash for their creativity.

“We’re moving toward this larger independent comedy scene,” said Brown. “That’s a win-win for the comics because they get more stage time and become better comics, and it’s also a way for audience members to see really good comics for not a lot of money.”

Independent shows in Philadelphia usually cost between $5 and $20.
