N.C. Wyeth Studio in Chadds Ford is one of the eight mythic artist studios throughout the country that every art lover and history buff should visit, writes Annikka Olsen for the Artnet

N.C. Wyeth, who died in 1945, was recognized during his lifetime primarily for his work as an illustrator. He drew illustrations for many famous titles, including The Last of the Mohicans and Treasure Island

Wyeth was born in Massachusetts and was formally trained by George L. Noyes and Howard Pyle in private art classes starting in his youth. Pyle advised the artist to travel and paint in the American West to gain experience, which Wyeth did for several years.

Wyeth used the money that he earned to make Treasure Island illustrations and bought 18 acres of land in Chadds Ford. He built his home and studio on this land.

Today, the house and studio are administered by the Brandywine River Museum of Art. Visitors have the option to take guided tours of the property, through which they learn about the artist’s life and career, as well as his artistic practice.
