Berwyn resident James Stango, a full-time CPA for two decades, started cutting his own firewood 12 years ago as a hobby, just to heat his home, writes Jenn Ladd for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Soon after, his hobby morphed into something more as he started selling wood to others, mainly friends of friends.
When he realized how much he enjoyed his side activity, he started taking courses in logging and tree-climbing, and soon became an insured logging subcontractor. This made it possible for him to amass enough wood to begin supplying several restaurants in the region, such as Mike’s BBQ, La Cabra Brewing Smokehouse, and Holy Que Smokehouse.
His business has an Instagram page and little else. The only marketing he does is reaching out to restaurants he believes he can take on.
As far as finances go, his wife is the one in charge of keeping the balance sheet.
“I don’t want to crunch any numbers when it comes to this,” he said. “After being a CPA for almost 20 years, sitting at a desk, I just appreciate being outside in the woods.”
