Although it is well known that local fire departments and other EMS providers are heroes in Chester County, the bucket of recognition is never full when speaking about their constant aid around the area, writes Shannon Montgomery for County Lines Magazine.

While there has been a decrease in volunteers, those that take part in these local fire departments dedicate their lives to the job.

The West Chester Fire Department goes back to 1799. It currently has around 150 active members that answer over 1,200 calls a year spanning across their 27-square-mile coverage area.

“The biggest thing any first responder sees is a tremendous amount of tragedy,” said Chief Steve Pelna. “But every once in a while, we get to see amazing feats of humanity — delivering a baby outside of a hospital, bringing someone back to life from cardiac arrest.”

The Goshen Fire Company was once a small garage with one fire truck in 1950. Now, it runs two stations with 15 pieces of equipment thanks to efforts from 55 volunteer firefighters and 24 full- and part-time firefighters.

The Longwood Fire Company was established to protect Longwood Gardens in 1921. It has since blossomed to serve areas such as East Marlborough, Pennsbury, and Pocopson Township.

Finally, the Phoenixville Fire Department was founded in 1874 covers a dense area of the county with over 18,000 residents. the recently opened Paradise Street station has living quarters for up to 10 people and six drive-through bays.

“If you’re looking to get involved in your community and do something meaningful, there’s no better way to do it,” said Chief Eamon Brazunas. “There is no higher calling.”
