For the first time in its 84-year history, iconic clothier Boyds opened a permanent store outside of Philadelphia in September in Wayne, writes Bob Fernandez for The Philadelphia Inquirer

The high-end retailer tested out the suburban waters with a pop-up in late 2020. At that time, its Center City store was significantly damaged in the civil unrest following the George Floyd murder. The suburban store did well, which led Boyds to open a permanent location.

The new Wayne shop is located in the former Anthropologie space on West Lancaster Avenue. The store is about one-third the size of the Center City flagship.

The space has a bit more of a casual feel than downtown. The store stocks both men’s and women’s fashion. Boyds only used to offer men’s fashion but added women’s clothing in 2010. Today, this accounts for around a third of the retailer’s revenue.

The merchandise mix at the Wayne store mirrors the downtown store, according to Boyds president Kent Gushner, the third generation in his family to run Boyds.
