West Sadsbury Township Officials Want to Do Away with Open Space Tax
West Sadsbury Township is one of the rare municipalities in rural Pennsylvania that is not looking to increase its open space tax, but instead axe it altogether, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.
On Election Day, voters will be able to say if they want to keep the 0.70 percent tax rate or if they want to repeal it.
“We’re doing away with the tax effectively because we no longer need the income coming in for open space,” said Township Supervisor Ed Haas.
The tax was enacted many years ago to generate funds to protect and preserve open space. In July, the three West Sadsbury Township supervisors unanimously voted to authorize the filing of a referendum that would determine its future fate.
“We’ve had the tax for a while,” said Haas. “It’s generated enough income.”
