Wall Street Journal: More Employees Seeking Bigger Raises Due to Inflation. It’s Time For You to Do the Same

Twenty Dollar Bills

Inflation has been hard-hitting over the last year, with many noting the pinch of prices most in grocery stores and gas stations. Not to mention the jumping costs of houses.

While many had accepted inflation as a normal part of life previously, these new sharp increases have finally prompted some to start looking for relief. And that has meant finally working up the nerve to ask their boss for a raise.

The Wall Street Journal reports that you are far from alone if you have been considering asking for a higher salary. But that can be daunting due to the fear that you will be told you have not done enough to warrant one.

So how do you set yourself up for the best odds of success?

Like many things, a good first step is to do research. Look at what other companies are offering in job listings for the same type of work you are already doing. Having concrete numbers that your pay is below the new standard bolsters your argument.

It also helps to have tangible examples of what you have achieved lately to deserve a raise. Maybe you recently finished a program you went back to school for. Maybe you did well completing an important project. Perhaps you have been an asset to other departments lately. Go in with specific instances that support your request.

And the last important step is to practice. You need to be confident in what you are asking for. Know what you plan to say in response if your boss does not immediately seem convinced. Just pointing out the rising cost of living is not likely to be persuasive. You have to make your boss believe keeping you around is worth the extra cost.
