A group of West Chester University swimmers recently helped save the life of a choking woman at a lunch spot in York, Pa. They then went on to win several races at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Swimming Championship. Mike Jensen dove into the circumstances of this memorable day for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“We were just having a little Subway in the food court, six of us,” said Logan Brockway, a WCU swimmer.

One of his teammates, Stephen Dow, happened to noticed a woman in a nearby booth having trouble breathing.

He thought about jumping in to help, but he remembered that Brockway was better skilled at the Heimlich maneuver (he teaches it to aspiring lifeguards at West Chester).

He pointed out the woman to Brockway, who immediately leapt into action. He continued administering the Heimlich maneuver until the paramedics arrived. By that time, the woman was already able to get some air.

“She never went unconscious,” said Dow, an Avon Grove High School grad.

After the life-saving incident, the swimmers headed for their respective races.

Brockway first took part in a 200-freestyle relay final, which he won by a whisker. An hour later, he came in first in the 400-individual medley final.

As a team, WCU claimed its 34th PSAC swimming title.
