Henderson High School graduate Luke Wierman, a faceoff specialist on the University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team, was recently named the Big Ten Conference Specialist of the Week after a career day in a 20-8 victory over Loyola, the ninth-ranked team in the country.

Wierman won a career-high 19 faceoffs against the Greyhounds, going 76 percent from the X while scoring two goals, notching an assist, and picking up a career-best 11 ground balls.

“(Loyola is) really scrappy in the middle of the field and everything, and our scout (team) all week did a great job helping us prepare for that,” Wierman told The Diamondback, the independent student newspaper of the University of Maryland.

The West Chester native’s three points were a career-best for a single game, as he dominated at the faceoff and consistently won possessions for the Terrapins. His 19 wins were the ninth-most in a single game in program history.

Wierman, a junior, is majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice.
