Drew Shelton, a Downingtown West senior, is staying in shape for the start of the football season at Penn State by showing off his basketball skills. Joey Piatt netted Shelton’s story for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The school’s star offensive tackle has been helping the basketball team line up victories at the prompting of Penn State coach James Franklin.

“I had talks with Coach Franklin,” said Shelton. “When I decided I wasn’t going to enroll early, it really seemed like basketball was the next best option to keep in shape — almost as a replacement for winter workouts.”

One of Penn State’s top Class-of-2022 signees, Shelton is no stranger to the hardwood. Before he was a four-star offensive tackle, Shelton was also a member of Downingtown West’s basketball program. He spent his freshman and sophomore seasons playing both sports. A junior-year trip to IMG Academy in Florida, however, was enough to tip the scales of his interest to the gridiron.

“I’m a competitor at heart, and I really just want to get out here and compete, have fun, put my team in the best position they can be,” said Shelton.
