A ransomware attack is inhibiting newspaper production in Lancaster County.

Foreign ransomware targeted at LNP Media Group in neighboring Lancaster County limited its ability to print complete publications, writes Harper Ho for the York Dispatch.

Steinman Communications, which owns the group, is being extorted for an undisclosed amount of money in return for being able to regain access to key features used in printing the daily LNP and other newspapers.

Company officials have described the demand as a “sophisticated criminal attack.” However, they declined to say if they are planning to pay the ransom or ignore the ultimatum and continue searching to find a way to circumvent its limitations.

Also as part of its efforts to counter the attack, Steinman Communications has hired a cybersecurity firm to determine its scope since being discovered on Sept. 30.

The issue has also been elevated to the FBI.

According to the company, there is no evidence that any of the subscriber payment information was compromised in the attack.
