Downingtown resident Nicholas Gross recently won the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea golf tournament, finishing the 54-hole competition at 20-under-par 193, writes Tommy Braswell for The Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier.

In doing so, the young golfer managed to shatter the South Carolina Junior Golf Association’s previous tournament record by a whopping six strokes.

“I tried to keep the mistakes off the card and stay patient and it end up working just fine,” he said. “This is my lowest 54-hole total ever, and it’s special to do it on a course like this.”

Despite a double bogey, Gross shot a nine-under-par 62 in the opening round at the Country Club of Charleston. He followed with a 67, and then made seven birdies and no bogeys in the final round. During the tournament, he carded a total of 24 birdies.

“I love it,” said Gross. “I really enjoyed the golf course. I tried to play smart and not make any mistakes. There wasn’t really any pressure. I’ve been in that position before. So I tried to have fun and go with it.”
