The first step to a sustainable competitive edge in the future is helping team members be more productive and staying focused on the most important goals to achieve the company Big Hairy Audacious Goal Jim Collins talks about.

What is your definition of productivity? Are your measurements simple and consistent so that everyone on the team knows what the score is and whether they are winning or losing every day?

Your employees will perform better and be more engaged when they are properly trained, coached, and motivated on clear expectations of the outcomes for the team. Your overall success is dependent on the ability of the team to produce the right results in the right way and at the right time.

When productivity is not where you want it to be ask yourself:

  • Do we have the right people on the bus?
  • Do we have the right people in the right seats?
  • Are they doing the right things?
  • Are we managing the team for optimum productivity?
  • Are our employees engaged in the work?
  • Are there obstacles that need to be removed?

A few really good ingredients for improving productivity and engagement are:

  1. Make sure you have clearly defined goals for your team and you have clearly communicated your expectation of them. In other words, be sure they are crystal clear on what you want from them in the way of production. No mutual mystification allowed.
  2. People must understand what their roles and responsibilities are first and foremost. Then, they must be given the process and procedures to assure them they can achieve the company goals. The best way to make sure you have the right people in the right positions is with the Achiever personality assessment. It is important that each person’s talents and abilities matches their position.
  3. Feedback is the breakfast of champions. You must have a meaningful scoreboard and use measurements to track results. Every sports team has a way to keep score and so should we so we can know if we are winning or losing. Paul J. Meyer said, “Keeping score lets you know when you have won!  The score is the exciting part of the game – the source of the competitive spirit that makes work fun. Keeping score lets you see your personal progress toward your goals. It keeps you on track and motivates you to grow”
  4. Accountability is critical to you and your employees’ success and to ensure proper commitment to the goals.
  5. Consequences both good and bad should be defined and understood up front. The best surprise is no surprise.

This is the way to start building a results-driven, goal-oriented organization.
