After finalizing the purchase of the 103-acre Spar Hill Farm, the Kennett Township Board of Supervisors voted to convert one of these acres into a volunteer-based farm that will serve as a community food source, writes Richard L. Gaw for the Chester County Press.

The board approved the request by Emergent Abundance Farming Collective to create a farm where volunteers could grow, harvest, and distribute organic produce to Kennett Area Community Service and other local food banks. These support members of the community who are facing food insecurity.

Cultivation of the new farm will start soon, with food distribution expected to reach food banks by the summer.

According to Julia Smagorinsky of EAFC, the cultivation of the new farm fits together with the organization’s mission to produce an abundance of food and share food, knowledge, skill, and access to land with the Kennett Township community.

Smagorinsky now has big plans for the future of the project.

Among other things, “we’re hoping in the future to include natural playgrounds and hide-outs, in order to make the outdoors attractive for children,” she said.
