It was more than 50 years ago when Lewis J. McCoy, PE said, “Everyone deserves clean water.” His passion, his experience, and his engineering expertise were the foundation of the early years of Spotts, Stevens, and McCoy (SSM).

Since then, the firm has continued to lead the charge in making the world a better place today and for future generations by helping clients plan, design, build, operate, and protect their infrastructure, assets, and resources. In a general sense, Spotts, Stevens, and McCoy is an engineering firm in the business of problem-solving.

Expertise, experience, and passion aren’t the only things that have carried this regional multi-disciplinary engineering, environmental, and surveying firm throughout the years. It’s family. McCoy’s Son, Patrick M. McCoy, PE, who serves as the company’s Executive Vice President, and CEO Brian R. Kelly are the firm owners who together make SSM a family-owned and operated firm.

Patrick, a long-term resident of West Chester Borough, knew that expanding services to the Chester County region and growing the firm’s divisions to include Energy and Sustainability Services were necessary steps in not only expanding the firm’s footprint, but also extending its passions.

“Every day at SSM, we look for new ways to grow our footprint, expand our services, increase our capacity, and escalate our opportunities to make an impact on the world,” said Patrick. “I am looking forward to expanding relationships in our newest office community as well as through our Practical Energy Solutions division, led by its founder Paul Spiegel.”

SSM traces its history back to 1932 when Walter Spotts opened an engineering and surveying practice. In 1970, Spotts’s practice was acquired by the incorporated business Stevens and McCoy, opened by Lewis McCoy Sr. Thus, SSM was born.

Today, SSM blends second-generation entrepreneurial thinking with traditional values – innovation, built on a solid foundation. Additional offices are located in Lancaster, Lehigh Valley, and Reading.
