West Chester University is slated to receive $18.6 million of the $353 million earmarked for Philadelphia-area colleges and universities as part of the second round of federal stimulus funding, writes Michelle Caffrey for The Philadelphia Business Journal.

Schools were required to evenly split the initial round of CARES Act funding last spring between operating expenses and emergency grants for students. The latest stimulus, however, gives them more flexibility in how the money is used.

According to WCU president Christopher Fiorentino, about $6 million of the $18.6 million will go toward students in need, and the remaining $12 million will also be directed toward student-focused spending.

The stimulus money only covers a portion of WCU’s funding shortfall for the current school year, but if things return to normal in the fall, Fiorentino anticipates a “quick rebound.”

He’s also hopeful that higher education could see more funding in the future, although he’s not counting on it.

“I certainly would hope and expect that if it were approved, higher ed would be a part of it, but it’s not a good idea for us to plan for that,” Fiorentino said.
