West Chester Woman Invents StressGrip, a Device to Help Turn Stress into Your Friend

By

West Chester-based entrepreneur Lauren Richards made an interesting discovery during the COVID-19 pandemic. After reading Dr. Kelly McGonigal’s book The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It, Richards realized that she could turn her own stress energy into productive energy. Richards, the inventor behind the LaborGrip, which is a device designed to help mothers in birth, saw an opportunity.

She realized that the new science behind stress could be transformational if made more accessible. Dr. McGonigal’s book shows that you can confront stress in order to live a happier and healthier lifestyle – wisdom contrary to commonly held beliefs about avoiding stress. Richards had been learning that many of the mothers who used her LaborGrip product during labor often used it long after birth, during stressful times raising children. This was the moment Richards decided to launch a sister product called StressGrip, designed to help anyone confront their stress in a productive way, anytime, anywhere.

During COVID-19, stress levels around the world have been rising dramatically.

“Stress can increase your risk of heart disease and depression,” said Richards. “It can kill your brain cells and even make you age faster, but only if you let it. The new science shows confronting stress head-on can make you smarter, stronger, and more successful. In fact, studies show embracing stress, not avoiding it, is the key to improving your health and happiness. This was such a compelling epiphany for me; I had to do something to make this revelation more accessible.”

Since the StressGrip’s launch in April 2020, thousands of users have started to rave about the product’s effectiveness. One of the hundreds of reviews on Amazon outlines a typical story about a woman who bought the StressGrip for her husband, who has a high-stress job:

“I ordered this for my husband as he has a high level of stress at his job, but he also has some wrist issues as well. I figured it would be a ‘win-win’ for him … help him relieve his stress and exercise his wrist at the same time. He didn’t have a ton of interest in it when I first showed it to him. Since he works at home, I can hear him on the phone and when he’s upset. After a particularly unpleasant call, I went into his office and set it down on his desk, turned and left. When he finished work hours later, he said to me, “That hand stress and exercise thing is pretty neat!” … He’s used it every day (when working) since that first time. And it helps to both reduce his stress level/calm him down (VERY important since he has high BP!) but also helps strengthen the wrist issue he’s been dealing with. He finds it comfortable, easy to adjust (the grip resistance) and easy to use. While we’ve not yet travelled anywhere, it’s small enough that it will easily fit in an overnight bag or even my purse. I was fascinated when I first heard about the StressGrip but I find it even more fascinating to see the change and reduced stress in my husband since he’s been using his StressGrip. It definitely works for him!”

The StressGrips come in multiple sizes to fit any hand size. In fact, due to customer requests, the devices are now available in a lower-strength model called the FidgetGrip, designed for teens who are attending online classes.
