A project launched three years ago by the Beautification Advisory Commission of Phoenixville is transforming ordinary utility boxes into works of art, writes Jen Samuel for the Daily Local News.

In 2017, the commission issued a call-to-artists to paint the first selection of utility boxes. Since then, local artists have transformed 13 mechanical boxes with their works.

Those who are chosen to beautify these utility boxes receive a small stipend that helps them cover the cost of materials.

Having been inspired by the many local preserves managed by Natural Lands, Phoenixville artist Alexander Jensen recently painted a Southern Chester County meadow on one of the borough’s utility boxes.

“My goal in all of my work is to wake people up,” said Jensen. “There are many things to be aware of, but what resonates in me is the feeling that we are becoming too detached from our natural and responsible way of life.”

The mural he completed in October also offers “The Answers Are In Nature” as words of inspiration.

“If passersby look at my work and ponder nature for one single moment, I’ve done something worthwhile,” he said.
