One of the many creative outlets afforded residents at Dunwoody Village, a continuing care retirement community in Newtown Square, is a floral studio.

Dunwoody staff recently reaped the benefits of that creativity, after more than 20 residents decorated gift bags that were then filled with goodies and distributed to workers in all departments across the campus.

Fran Northrup, chair of the floral committee and the visionary behind the studio, coordinated the project over several months. Social distancing meant fewer people in the studio at any given time. An excess of silk flowers that had accumulated over time were cut and used to decorate the outside of the gift bags.

In addition to a variety of snack items, the bags included thank-you notes from the residents, as well as a “Hero” pin.

“Dunwoody’s staff have been going above and beyond their normal routines, as we all navigate changes in processes brought on by COVID-19,” said Curt Sayers, Dunwoody Village’s Director of Human Resources who helped coordinate the project with the floral committee. “The residents recognize that, and their gesture went a long way in making the staff feel genuinely appreciated.”

The floral studio was established in 2015 when Northrup was preparing to move to Dunwoody. She offered to donate her vast inventory of floral arranging supplies in exchange for Dunwoody providing space for a studio.

Since its inception, the floral committee has held classes and designed wreaths and arrangements that have been shared throughout Dunwoody and the community.
