Eight women who embarked on a 116-mile Underground Railroad walk on Sept. 5 in honor of Harriet Tubman were welcomed by the community last week as they reached their destination in Kennett Square, writes Jen Samuel for the Daily Local News.

The walk, which was organized by the nonprofit We Walk With Harriet, began in Cambridge, Md.

“We are walking because we are the daughters of Harriet Tubman,” the nonprofit stated. “We are walking because this is our story to tell. We are walking for health, love, and for justice. Harriet gained freedom walking. We walk with Harriet.”

After greeting the group, community members gathered inside The Creamery of Kennett Square, where the women talked about their pilgrimage along the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway.

Kennett Square mayor Matt Fetick took this opportunity to emphasize Kennett Square’s long history “of being an endpoint for the Underground Railroad” and praise the women for bringing recognition to the historic movement and the legacy of Harriet Tubman.

“I find the walkers inspiring – it’s the right message for today and we are the right community for it,” said Fetick. “We are very diverse.”
