The Plantation Field International Horse Trials in East Marlborough Township may have held its final event due to the controversy surrounding the word “plantation” in its name, writes Fran Maye for the Daily Local News.
Cuyler Walker, the owner of the land on which the event takes place, has canceled the lease for the property.
“This is directly due to the attack on the name ‘Plantation’ by Eventing Nation, an equestrian online news journal,” said Denis Glaccum, president of Plantation Field Equestrian Events.
The nation’s leading publication for eventing news also announced it would not be covering the events taking place at the property because it felt the name “Plantation” was insensitive to people of color.
The property was given its name two decades ago after the plantings on the property. It is not known for there being slavery at the site.
“Colonial Pennsylvania considered properties less than 100 acres a farm and properties with more than 100 acres a plantation,” said Glaccum. “There is no reference to race in this definition. The Unionville area is historically a Quaker community. The Quakers were one of the earliest abolitionist groups and fought against slavery. This area was also part of the Underground Railroad.
“I find it incredibly sad that the staff at a publication who do not understand the history of the area are directly causing the end of one of the best and most consistent events in the country.”
