Devon Native Ann Li Elevated to Main Draw of Upcoming U.S. Open
Devon native Ann Li, 20, has been elevated to the main draw of the U.S. Open following the recent withdrawals of several players, including former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.
The U.S. Open commences Aug. 31. in New York City.
Li burst onto the international tennis scene three years ago, when she reached the final at the 2017 Wimbledon Junior Championships.
Making it to the final came with a special perk for then 17-year-old: a chance to attend the Wimbledon Champions Ball and meet her idol, Roger Federer.
“He has been my idol since like forever,” Li told the United States Tennis Association. “He’s someone I look up to and want to be like. He’s been my role model for a long time. He’s like almost perfect, and the way he plays is so effortless.”
Two weeks after finishing as the runner-up at the Wimbledon Junior Championships, Li won her first professional title on the ITF Women’s Circuit, a $15,000 tournament in Evansville, Ind.
She is currently ranked No. 133 in the world and has pocketed $219,156 in prize money during her brief career.
