Phoenixville native Ilyse Gorman, a chemistry/secondary education major at Immaculata University, has received the prestigious Clare Boothe Luce Undergraduate Research Scholar Award.

The scholarship is a $5,000 summer research award that allows Gorman to explore Raman spectroscopy, which is commonly used in chemistry to provide a structural fingerprint by which molecules can be identified.

Under the tutelage of Sister Rose Mulligan, associate professor of chemistry, and Luna Zhang, professor of chemistry, Gorman is examining the differences in formulations of over-the-counter drugs, identifying classes of recyclable plastics and exploring fingerprint regions that may further aid in identifying the drugs and plastics.

After completing approximately 150 hours of undergraduate research, over a 10-12-week period during the summer, Gorman will earn research credits in chemistry and will have an opportunity to present her research in the fall.

“As a student with exceptional academic aptitude, Gorman is very capable of the chemistry content,” said Sister Rose. “She is very personable, readily helps other students, and works hard in her classes and labs, manages her time well, and would give her best effort and time to this research opportunity.”

Gorman plans to continue her education, exploring research in chemistry after graduating from Immaculata. She would like to pursue a career in chemical education.

The Clare Booth Luce Program is the single most significant source of private support for women in science, mathematics, and engineering. Since 1989, the Clare Boothe Luce Program has sought to increase the presence and strengthen the role of women in fields where they are underrepresented.
