Kennett Square is joining West Chester in closing one of its major streets to allow more room for outside dining and an open-air marketplace to help local restaurants and small businesses that have been decimated by the pandemic, writes Fran Maye for the Daily Local News.

Starting now, the 100 block of East State Street will be closed on Thursdays from 6-10 PM and Fridays starting at 5 PM and ending Sundays at 10 PM.

“This is a continuation in the re-opening of businesses in Kennett Square that will allow for social distancing and safe practices,” said Kennett Square Mayor Matt Fetick. “All the businesses will be required to comply with the Pennsylvania state guidelines on reopening and Chester County Health Department safety requirements.”

The street’s closure will allow businesses to expand their operations onto the sidewalks so that pedestrians can access the street as an open-air marketplace.

The original closing plan will be evaluated for its effectiveness, with the possibility of expanding it onto additional blocks.
