West Chester resident Max Ebenreiter, a member of the Philadelphia Boys Choir, is still practicing his craft through virtual rehearsals, writes Cassie Owens for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Since March 16, the Boys Choir has been hosting several Zoom rehearsals each week. While they cannot perform right now, they are preparing for the concerts that will take place after the pandemic, said Jeffrey Smith, the Boys Choir’s artistic director.

Singing during virtual rehearsals has also taught Ebenreiter, 13, something about his own voice, namely how loud it can actually get.

“You don’t want your voice to stand out in the choir,” said Ebenreiter, “so you can sing a lot louder than you normally would.”

However, some things are harder to learn when choir members are not together.

“Like tempo and dynamics and the volume you’re supposed to sing it,” said Ebenreiter.

Also, there are no opportunities to self-correct when singing alone, as opposed to singing with a group.

“If you’re making a mistake, you can listen to the group and kind of assess yourself and say, ‘OK, what do I have to fix?’” he said.
