West Chester resident Norm Eavenson, a long-time talent evaluator who counts numerous college basketball coaches as subscribers to his service, has warned that it will be a while before recruiters will be able to watch players live again, writes Mike Jensen for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“The NCAA has always tilted toward the word scholastic,’’ he said. “AAU is non-scholastic. They’re more worried about whether there’s going to be football in the fall than anything.”

However, it’s not only on the NCAA to make this decision, according to Eavenson, because it will be hard to get building operators to let people in from a liability standpoint.

“What venue is going to open up for these events?” he asked.

This means recruiters will have to find other ways to determine who to offer scholarships to. And consider this: Should a smaller school manage to land a player who at first manages to escape the notice of bigger schools, it may lose that player once things return to normal.

“There’s nothing more aggravating to recruit a good player and then someone swoops in after 18 months,” said Eavenson.
