Exton Man Beats the Odds, Returns Home from Hospital After Being on a Ventilator

Jim Cracas, the owner of Pickering Valley Feed and Farm in Exton, is among the rare group of people who have managed to come off a ventilator and beat the coronavirus, writes Fran Maye for the Daily Local News.

Cracas was admitted to Paoli Memorial Hospital about four weeks ago and was quickly diagnosed with COVID-19. After exhibiting respiratory problems, he was put on a ventilator that helped him breathe for the next five days.

“He was all alone and to see him go through that by himself was horrendous,” said Penny, Cracas’s wife and a former nurse at Chester County Hospital.

What helped, she said, was the tremendous support she received from the community.

“It was amazing to see the community come together,” she said.

Unlike most of the people who are put on a ventilator, Cracas began to slowly recover and was released from the hospital after 11 days. Now back at home, he is looking at a lengthy recovery but he is not complaining.

“I know that I am one of the lucky ones because I am still here,” he said.
