The number of new coronavirus cases in Chester County might finally be going down, according to Jeanne Casner, Director of the Chester County Health Department, writes Michael Rellahan for the Daily Local News.

After the first case was recorded more than six weeks ago, the county has reported 1,339 cases and 102 deaths from coronavirus-related causes. And while the number of new cases kept growing over that period, things may now be changing.

The number of positive tests increased from 207 on April 1 to 1,339 on April 29. The rise has shown only minimal signs of leveling off.

However, Casner showed that the individual daily counts are declining. On April 19, the county recorded 43 new cases, 30 the day after, and 32 the day after that. There was a surge on April 23 with 70 new cases and 11 deaths and on April 24 with 68 new cases. After that, there were 46 on April 25 and 27 on April 26, with no new deaths.

“We believe we have peaked,” said Casner.

Still, she said the county “will need to expand testing capacity to be able to fully re-open.”
