New Book by Glenmoore Resident Looks at Past, Present of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s Coal Region

Glenmoore resident Marion Piccolomini has authored a book – titled Southwestern Pennsylvania’s Coal Region – that looks at both the past and present of that region’s coal industry, writes Dave Zuchowski for the Greene County (Pa.) Messenger.

The book covers the region that includes Greene, Fayette, Washington, Allegheny, Westmoreland, Somerset, and Indiana counties with 16 chapters and 163 paired photos. The photographs show how each site looked in the past and what it looks like now.

“Initially, I intended to write a local history on the coal and coke industry, but my publisher suggested a collection of past and present photos,” said Piccolomini.

The aim was to pique visual interest from the reader, instead of simply providing a narrative. This was partly to interest younger readers who may not be familiar with these relics of the coal industry.

The author gathered the photos that depict the history of the sites from various sources, including universities, museum archives, local historical societies, and private collections. She then took the complementary photos of their present state herself.
