Dorothy Allison, author of the controversial Bastard Out of Carolina, describes herself on her website as a “feminist, working class storyteller, a Southern expatriate, a poet, and a happily born-again Californian.”

When she appears at West Chester University on Tuesday, Feb. 25, she’ll bring a powerful message about why she insists that “class, race, sexuality, and gender and all other categories by which we categorize and dismiss each other need to be excavated from the inside.”

Allison’s free presentation is open to the public and begins at 7 PM in the theater on the ground floor of Sykes Student Union at 110 West Rosedale Avenue.

Feminist writer, cultural critic, and social influencer Jamilah Lemieux – who was recently featured in television’s docuseries Surviving R. Kelly – will share “Lessons from #BlackTwitter: Social Media, Pop Culture, and Black America” in a free presentation on Wednesday, Feb. 26. The program begins at 6 PM in Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall at the corner of High Street and University Avenue.

As a social activist, Lemieux uses her millennial feminist voice to talk about issues surrounding race, gender, and sexuality. A graduate of Howard University, she began her writing career through blogging and mainstream media and is a three-time Black Weblog Award winner.
