Raymond Johnson, senior pastor at Christ Church in West Chester, is on a five-year mission to cultivate a congregation committed to joyful theological vitality, write Andrew J.W. Smith and Emil Handke for Southern Seminary Magazine.

Johnson, a three-time graduate of the Southern Seminary, has been holding Sunday Night Theology events that are essentially theological lectures presented by his guests. These have included Gregg R. Allison, professor of systematic theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

His goal is not to just have his church know theology, but also to care deeply about it. And people have responded to his efforts, with nearly 100 parishioners present at the latest lecture.

“I am thrilled to see that my people have begun to take these opportunities, not only as their own for them to learn, but to see this as a work that we are collectively doing for our church and for our community,” said Johnson.

The event extends beyond just what happens on Sunday nights, as the guests also preach on Sunday morning, answer questions from the church’s interns, and meet with area pastors.
