For the Union also examines how West Chester developed its enduring culture of equal rights and political influence.

The book includes a reprint of Lincoln’s first printed biography, published in 1860 in West Chester, in what is now known as the Lincoln Building. The biography was published as an editorial in a local newspaper, The Chester County Times.

Johnstone was inspired to write the book after he saw one of the only two remaining copies of the biography at the Chester County Historical Society.

“When I saw it, I thought, ‘We’re seeing an important part of our history. The story of how this happened needs to be told,’” said Johnstone.

The book will be available in two editions. A deluxe edition is being offered this month as part of a fundraiser for the Chester County Community Foundation. The paperback edition will be available in April.
