Millennial Mayors in Chester County ‘Determined to Bring Their Post-Industrial Towns Back from Dead’

Millennial mayors in Chester County are young, energetic, social media savvy, and “determined to bring their post-industrial towns back from the dead,” writes Sandy Hingston for Philadelphia magazine.

One of them is Peter Urscheler, or Mayor Pete as his Phoenixville constituents know him. Last Thanksgiving, he dressed up in a turkey suit to make a video to support Phoenixville’s Burn Off the Bird 5K. He also hosts a food web series called The Mayor’s Kitchen.

One of his latest additions to Phoenixville is 36 new electric-vehicle charging stations.

“It’s not an instant charge; you have to park for an hour,” he said. “While you’re waiting, why not check out our shops and breweries?”

Chris Mulhall of Honey Brook and Matt Fetick of Kennett Square are two more millennial mayors in Chester County. Former Downingtown Mayor Josh Maxwell, who recently resigned to become Chester County Commissioner, was also featured in the story.

During Maxwell’s tenure, Downingtown got on track to receive a new train station, went seven years without a tax increase, and repaid 60 percent of its debt.
