Rosazza and Son’s Florist & Greenhouses in Avondale continues to flourish even though the cut-flower industry is well past its heyday, writes J.F. Pirro for Main Line Today.

The business is run by 88-year-old Ralph Rosazza, who is continuing a tradition started by his grandfather Odone nearly a century ago. His father Clarence took over before handing the reigns to the current owner.

Rosazza’s sons have also dipped their toes in the family business, but have since ventured out on their own.

Rosazza sold flowers to the White House for decades. He specialized in carnations, which he supplied to presidents ranging from Harry Truman to George Bush Sr.

At one point, the Rosazza operation cut 1,500 carnations a day, investing only seven cents per flower. However, with most of the industry shifting its operations to South America, the last decade saw the costs skyrocket to $1.17 per flower.

With fewer carnations being sold each day, the family decided to stop producing their staple flower four years ago.

Today, the business offers a number of seasonal options, such as Easter bulbs, geraniums, vegetable plants, mums, and poinsettias.
