West Chester native Phoebe McClernon was one of three players from the University of Virginia to be selected last week in the National Women’s Soccer League Draft, writes John Shifflett for The Charlottesville (Va.) Daily Progress.

McClernon, a graduate of the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur in Villanova, was taken by the Orlando Pride in the second round, with the 14th overall pick. A defender, she played in 88 career games and made 69 starts for the Cavaliers, was a three-time All-ACC selection, and was named an All-American as a junior in 2018.

“It means the world to have been drafted by Orlando,” said McClernon, who played her club ball with the West Chester-based Penn Fusion Soccer Academy. “I am so excited to see girls I have played with the last four years get this opportunity.”

The Pride hopes to bounce back after having the lowest point total of any of the NWSL’s nine teams last season.
