Virginia Coates, a Downingtown resident who once lived in New York City, decided to head back to the Big Apple with her children for this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, write Rosemary Misdary, Chelsia Rose Marcius, and Shant Shahrigian for the New York Daily News.

“This year, I got divorced and I got my kids for Thanksgiving, said Coates, “so I’m celebrating by going to New York for the Thanksgiving Parade.”

During the parade, the family enjoyed watching a slew of balloons take over Manhattan’s sky despite the windy weather. Many of the usual suspects were present in the air, including Snoopy and Smokey Bear.

There was also some unintended excitement when the handlers of the Nutcracker balloon lost control of it, causing a woman to dash into its shoulder and promptly get knocked to the ground.

However, that did not affect the enjoyment of the Downingtown family as they took in the parade.

“I lived in New York City for many years,” said Coates. “I loved going to the parade, but now I miss it. I wanted my kids to see it, too.”
