Pair of Bishop Shanahan Grads Among WCU’s Seven All-Conference Field Hockey Honorees

By

For the second straight year, West Chester University claimed seven spots on the three All-PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) field hockey teams. Furthermore, the Golden Rams placed a program-record five players on the first team, and claimed three of the four major awards:

  • Senior forward Katie Thompson – Player of the Year
  • Junior defender Caitie McNamara – Defensive Player of the Year
  • Freshman goalkeeper Claire Nielsen – Rookie of the Year

Joining Thompson and McNamara on the first team were seniors Kat Roncoroni and Caitlin Kelly, a Coatesville native and graduate of Bishop Shanahan High School, and junior defender Marre Corver. Junior defender Emma Velez, another Coatesville native and Shanahan alum, and Nielsen were third-team honorees.

Kelly, a center midfielder who quarterbacked the top-ranked offense in the country, ranks third on the Golden Rams in both goals (16) and points (37).

WCU (18-1) will face either Kutztown or Southern New Hampshire in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Friday. After winning their first 18 matches of the season, the Golden Rams recently suffered their first loss, 3-2 in overtime, to Kutztown in the PSAC semifinals.
