West Bradford Township and Embreeville Redevelopment are getting closer to resolving the long-standing dispute regarding the Embreeville State School and Hospital site, writes Caitlin McCabe for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The site has been the subject of nearly six years of disagreement and litigation. The developer was hoping to transform the abandoned and fast-deteriorating former psychiatric hospital into a massive housing and commercial complex.

However, those plans were met with vehement resident opposition. Many locals argued that the plans were too dense for the area and instead wanted the parcel turned into open space.

Now, it seems their request is going to be met.

According to Township Manager Justin Yaich, the township has reached a “potential settlement agreement” with the developer. Under the terms of the tentative deal, Embreeville Redevelopment will demolish and remediate the facility that is believed to contain asbestos and mold, among other contaminants.

When the cleanup is completed, the township is expected to purchase the site for $22.5 million and turn it into open space with a combination of untouched forest and active recreation.
