Qlik, a data and analytics company based in King of Prussia, features an eight-week internship program that provides college students the chance to make contributions to a company with a global reach.

“It’s been a good opportunity, working at Qlik,” said Sarah Manno, a current intern.

Manno will be a junior at New York University this fall, majoring in international relations, economics, and political science and minoring in French.

As a corporate social responsibility intern, she is tasked with helping to strengthen Qlik’s outreach to charities and non-government organizations and its sustainability efforts with its data optimization software.

The role of the corporate social responsibility department is to ensure that Qlik is an ethical corporate citizen. She and her department help charities and companies achieve their sustainability goals by giving them software and building data visualization apps to help them improve operational capabilities.

Manno is a believer in corporate social responsibility, as it is ushering in a new era of responsible, sustainable corporate practices.

“It has definitely opened my eyes to a lot of different ways of being ethical,” she said.

Her internship experience at Qlik allows her to work with her interests in global data and political trends autonomously. She said that she has learned the power of data visualization as she saw its massive potential in geopolitics and business.

One of the many projects she is working on is to interpret and enter carbon emissions data into a Qlik engine, which generates data visualization that allows users to create maps and predictive models from trends. She also helps with building and developing Qlik applications and visualizations for multiple clients, like the United Nations.

While expanding her professional network, Manno hopes to learn more about data visualization and try to perfect her skills with the Qlik software.

“I think the software is really useful, and I would like to continue using it in my professional career,” she said.

Katie Lord, another current intern, will be a rising senior at Saint Joseph’s University and is studying business intelligence, data analytics, and marketing. The Berwyn native is an intern for Qlik’s culture and talent team, handling human relations. She first heard of Qlik from a professor in class.

“Being in both departments utilizes my double major, and it’s really nice to pair them both together and see it in the workplace,” Lord said.

Lord said Qlik includes interns in projects both large and small, because the company wants them to see Qlik for what it really is.

“They’re not shy about that,” Lord said. “They want you to gain that information and see what you can do with it.”

She saw this practice, firsthand, with her idea of establishing career events for employees to gain insights on a variety of internal opportunities. It was a course of action from data collected in an employee survey conducted by the culture and talent department.

“It was neat for one of my ideas be rolled out,” Lord said.

She also interns for the communications department. Lord creates and schedules social media posts and captions for their Twitter and LinkedIn pages.

She is also collaborating with an intern at Qlik’s Boston location, where they are developing a social media platform for the corporate social responsibility department.

“For Qlik, it doesn’t really matter where your base is, because you can make the connections anywhere,” Lord said.

Qlik has enabled interns like Manno and Lord to be the “big fish in the small pond” as they gain a broader perspective on data’s massive potential in the workplace and across many industries.
